A Christmas present I would like to get

Hello friends! I hope you’ve enjoyed my last post about my summer plans. In this post I’m talking about a Christmas present I would like to get.
I don’t like very much Christmas. I really hate having the house full of ornaments. But I love, with all my heart, the presents in any season of the year. I love the things wrapped in gift paper, whatever it is.

I think that a present I would like to get is a lot of maps. I really like maps, I have many of the trips I’ve done. I have always believed that serve to remind me the trips, or imagine how it would be elsewhere. I want it because I like to watch it, and it could be of places that I want to visit soon like Buenos Aires, or Punta Arenas.

I think that the chance I will get it is very small, because there´s not many people that know my love about maps. And, on the other hand, it’s difficult to get good maps of many places. I prefer to bring them from the parts that have come. So, I have to order them. If I don’t get it, I won’t be sad, because I’m always waiting for it.

I hoped you’ve enjoyed this post. Have a nice weekend!

Summer plans

Hello, Friends! I hope you’ve enjoyed my last post about my favorite piece of art. In this post  I’m talking about my summer plans.

There’s a little time for vacations and I don´t know what I will do still. But I have many ideas of what can I do. First, I’ll go to Valdivia and Linares to visit my family, and there’s a probability to go on a trip to Elqui Valley and Los Molles.

I always visit Valdivia with my family, and sometimes I invite some friend. It´s always a lot to thins to do, we can visit places like Chaitén o Chiloé, eat a lot of food like curantos and corn cake, one of my favorites. One of the most important activities I’ll do in summer, is going to the different Bierfest in the zone. There’s a lot of varieties. And I’m going to Elqui Valley and Los Molles with my boyfriend. I suppose that we will be going to the beach and drinking a lot of pisco.

I’ll spend January in Santiago, and I have already planned some things I would like to do, like going to tango practice and some technique seminars. Also, I’m working with the Sport Social Laboratory, so I have to study a little on my vacations, but it will be fun. I will take a course of screenplays too, with my sister, who loves cinema.

And I think that is all, if you have any suggestions, tell me. I hope you’ve enjoyed this post!

My favorite piece of art

Hello friends! I hope you’ve enjoyed my last post about the things I would do if I won the lottery. In this post I’m talking about my favorite piece of art.

I found quite difficult to choose only a piece of art, because there are many that I like. But if I had to choose any of my favorites, I would choose not a piece of plastic art or a movie or things like that, I would choose the Swan Lake.

The Swan Lake is a ballet composed by Piotr Tchaikovsky on 1876. Initially was a failure, but after was the most famous and popular ballets. The choreography of the original production was made by Julius Reisinger.

First I like because, I think that are a few things as beautiful as ballet. Second, the music is great, I always like it and fits perfectly with everything: the lights, the costume, the movements. And third (and last), is only ballet that I began to see but never finished, for many reasons. So, one of the things I have to do next year is see Swan Lake on the Municipal Theater, I really desire to achieve it.

I hope that you’ve enjoyed my post, have a good weekend!

The things I would if I won the lottery

Hello friends!! I hope you’ve enjoyed the last post about a super power I would like to have.  In this post I'll talk about the things I would do if I won the lottery.

If I ever won the lottery, there are a lot of things that I would to do, for example, travel. For that,  I would have to suspend my studies to travel, but later I would to resume it. I think that I would travel a year or two, trying to know as many countries as possible.

But before that, I think that I would invest in departments, for rental then. Also I would like to invite to my friends and family to dinner, to party then. Also, I would pay all the bills of my parents.

Besides, I would like to have a place where I can help homeless people, where there will also be workshops on social inclusion.

I hoped you enjoyed this post. Thank you all. Have a nice weekend and a good weekend.

A super power I would like to have

Hello friends!! I hope you’ve enjoyed the last post about my best holiday.  In this post I'll talk about a super power I would like to have.

The super power I would like to have is time travel. I would like to have it because it must be really interesting and exciting in past or future seasons for many reasons: you could learn anything you want about history and experience, for example, World War II or Prehistory. Also because it makes me very curious to know how people lived in the different periods of history.

If I ever had this superpower I would travel to Middle Ages, because I always wanted to know everything about this period, from habits to how cities had changed about all this time.

I think that it have negatives effects if I change the course of history, so if I ever had
this superpower I have to be very careful.

I would use this superpower not for good or evil, only for curiosity.

My best holiday

Hello friends!! I hope you’ve enjoyed the last post about a country I’d like to visit.  In this post I'll talk about my best holiday.

My best holiday was last summer, between January, February and part of March. I went to many places: Iquique, Arica, Peru, Bolivia, Valdivia and United States.

I started my best holiday ever in Santiago, where I took a plane to Iquique, and here I started my journey for the north of Chile and part of Peru and Bolivia. I went to Arica, Calama, Arequipa, Cuzco, Oruro, Uyuni, etc. It took about a month, and then I came back to Santiago in mid-february. I went with a group of friends in this trip. We did many things: trekking, eat a lot of food, know new and beautiful places.

When I came back to Santiago I spent a couple of days to celebrate my cousin’s birthday and traveled after to Valdivia. In Valdivia I stayed a couple of weeks with my parents, sister, grandfather, uncles and cousins. Here I celebrate my birthday, went to the beach and the bierfest.

Later, I traveled to the United States for one week with my parents and sister. We went to the tipical places: museums, the White House, etc. Also we met my father’s friends.

I think that was my best holiday, because I traveled to many places, learned new things for each country I visited and I made things that I’ve never did like trekking.

A country I’d like to visit

Hello friends!! I hope you’ve enjoyed the last post about my favorite TV programme I saw as a child.  In this post I'll talk about a country I'd like to visit.

A country I’d like to visit is Brazil, because I think that is a great place to have a lot of adventures and, at the same time, learn about a very rich culture.

I don’t know much about the country, but I went there once in 2010. I really like the lifestyle of the Brazilian people, they’re very nice with everybody. Also, they have beautiful scenery, tasty foods and  lots of interesting dances.

If someday I return to Brazil, I’ll try to learn as much as I can about the language and the culture: museums, talk to the people to see how is the brazilian life and, obviously, learn samba.

I think that I would live there, but for not very long, because I’d like to visit other countries and live there too, and it’s very hot there, but for a time it would be wonderful.

A TV programme I saw as a child

Hello, everyone!! I hope you enjoyed last post. Today I'm going to write about a a TV programme I saw as a child.

One of my favorite TV programs when I was a child is Hey, Arnold !  It was about the life of  a 9 years old boy, who lived in the suburbs of a city, showing the daily life with friends and classmates, each with different personalities and families.

I watched Hey, Arnold ! like two or three times every week I really enjoyed it, sometimes I wish see it, but I don’t know where the programme is transmitted, and I don’t want to watch it online.

I enjoyed the programme because even though it’s a children’s series touches on important issues as Helga suffered neglect of their parents, or the nostalgia felt by Arnold not remebering his own parents, and the importance of value of the trust, honesty and frienship. Also, I enjoyed the fun adeventures of Arnold and his friends to get goals. One of my favorite characters is Arnold’s grandmother because it’s a little crazy, confused dates, calls everyone by different names likes to dress up.

I hoped you enjoyed this post. Thank you all. Have a nice weekend and a good end of semester.

Have you had a good semester?

Have you had a good semester?

Hello, everyone!! I hope you enjoyed last post. Thanks for your comments! Today I'm going to write about this semester: the good and the bad things, my achievements and the subjects I’ve enjoyed and hated.

This semester has been good: I’ve made many researches, learnt a lot about sociology and other interest, like dancing, of which I took many seminars.

The good things that have happened are many: I won a scholarship to dance classes and seminars, I got a good job as a waitress and a dancer, and I’m planning a lot of new projects for this summer. Besides, I traveled to a beautiful place: Washington D.C.

Well, I also had situations that have not been so good, such a lack of time, because I have much to study and researches to do.

Two of my biggest achievements were winning the scolarship whit three magnificent teachers: Julio Rojas, Isabel and José Barrera. The other was my research with Claudio, one of my English classmates, about  Yungay neighborhood and inmigrants, wich we wil continue next semester.

That research is for a subject called Qualitative Technique, one of the funniest subjects I’ve had. I also enjoyed Statistics IV, because I really like to work with SPSS, an statistics program. On the other hand, I really hated Rural Sociology. It’s so boring! And professors teach more about anthropology than sociology.

I hoped you enjoyed this post. Thank you all. Have a nice weekend and a good end of semester.

Chicago school of Sociology

Hello, everyone! I hope that you have enjoyed my last post. Today I'm going to write about the Chicago school of sociology.

The Chicago School of Sociology emerged during de 20s and 30s, and specialized in urban sociology (that is kind of sociological study of life and human interaction in metropolitan areas like ghettos, cities, etc.) and the research into the urban environment. For this, the Chicago School of Sociology used theory and etnographic fieldwork in Chicago.

After World War II, many researchers rised up a "Second Chicago School": this members of the new school used, like a base for research, the symbolic interacionism combined wiht methods of field research, like the etnography.

Some of the more important researchers of this school are Robert Park, Louis Wirth, Everett Hughes, George herbert Mead and Frederic Thrasher.

The social studies theme can be divided in three lines: Culture contact and conflict, Ethnic groups and City politics.

The first one, Culture contact and conflict, studies the way how ethnic groups interact and compete in the process of community succession and institucional transformation. One of the more important studies is Thomas and Znaniecki's one, published in 1918, that talks about polish inmigrant in the United State. An important part of this studies concerned African Americans, like Frazier (1932) and Drake and Cayton (1945) studies, that shaped white americans perception of black communities for decades.

The second one, are studies about ethcnic groups. The more important are: Cressey (1932) that studied the dancehall and comercialized entertainment services, Kincheloe (1938) that studied church succession, Janowitz (1952) that made his resarch about community press and Hughes (1979) studied the real state board.

The third one is about city politics. Themore important studies are from Gosnell (1935), Wilson (1960) and Grimshaw (1992) that considered american politics, voting and other forms of participation. Banfield and Wilson (1963) placed Chicago city plitics in a broaded context.

Thanks to all my readers :)

A photograph I like

Hello, everyone! I hope that you have enjoyed my last post. Today I'm going to write about a photograph I like.

This photograph was taken by a friend, Felipe. In this photograph I'm with my best friend, Beatriz. We were on Colca Valley, near Arequipa, in Peru. This photograph was taken at the beginning of our trip to Peru and Bolivia, in mid-January. We were taking a trekking for all the valley, we took two days to cross it.

I really like this photograph, because it reminds me of the trip I did with my group of  friends. Also, I remembered the people we met, with which I still maintain contact, the places we knew. It was a very cool summer. Besides, this photo is important to me, because was our second trip to the outside, five years ago we went to brazil, and it's good to take the "official photo" of the trip. I want to have many more trips like that.

A food I hate!!

Hello, everyone!! I hope you enjoyed last post. Thanks for your comments! Today I'm going to write about a food I hate.

One of the foods I really hate is meat: beef, pork, etc. Only the red meat, because I really like turkey, fish and seafood. I hate meat because I don't like the taste and the smell, it's like a dead animal. Every meal that has meat, although it's only a little, ruins my meal. The taste it's so bad.

Also I hate so much oil or salt in the meals. If someday I have to eat a meal with too much meat, salt and oil, probably I'll escape and never go back to the place or I'll kill myself. IT'S SO DISGUSTING.
I think that no circumstance could ever make me eat meat, or so much oil or salt, I'd rather starve.

Thanks to all my readers :)

Expectations for a new semester

Hello, everyone! I hope that you have enjoyed my first post. Today I'm going to write about my expectations for this new semester.

This term I have 7 subjects, most that I've never had, they're seven. The names of the subjects are Cultural Sociology, Sociological Theory III, Political Sociology, Estatistics IV, Qualitative Techniques, English III and Rural Sociology I. The last one is my elective subject, and my favorite, because is very interesting and we learn about rural life. At the end of the next term, we're going to the country to make an investigation. I'm very excited about this!

I'm not taking many curricular activities. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays I go to tango lessons. I think is the most important activity I do, and helps me to relax and do some exercise. I go to the lessons with my mother and some friends.

At university, I'm not part of any activity. Sometimes I go to assemblies, but it's all.

I'm hoping to pass all subjects, specially Sociological Theory III, because it is very hard and a lot of work. And I'm hoping to have time to sleep, too.

Thanks to all my readers :) Hope you pass all subjects too.

A country I'd like to visit

A country I'd like to visit

Hello friends!! I'm Paulina, a sociology student. This is my first post on the blog. I'll talk about a country I'd like to visit.

The country I've always wanted to visit is Argentina. Yeah, I know that is not too far, but I never been there. I wish to go, because I want to go to the big libraries, milongas and Corrientes avenue, that is like Broadway of tango, but in Buenos Aires. I'm also interested in the use of "Lunfardo", a kind of slang.

Argentina is a  multicultural country, and that is expressed in the multiple forms of art. There are famous writers like Sabato, Cortazar and Borges. Also, there are excellent musicians like Astor Piazzolla. Argentina is the best place to learn about Tango culture: from how to dance to differenciate orchestras, like D'Arienzo's one, o Carlos di Sarli's one.

If I travel to there, the first thing I would do is take the "Subte", the argentinian subway, to go to the Carlos Gardel's corner, a kind of themed restaurant, with tango shows. After that, I'll go to some milonga to dance.

I would love to live and study there a couple of years, because I wouldn't have many problems with the language, and it would be a good experience. I really hope to be there someday. Who knows? Maybe I will be there in a couple of months.

Thanks for reading me, hugs for all my readers :)
